THE UNIVERSE is on loan from the artist

The etchings of the printmaker Nicholas Nicola.

ARTIST STATEMENT

As a late bloomer’ Nicholas Nicola’s recent etchings display an interest in the Australian bush. Knowing he is portraying a landscape once fully occupied by the ‘first Australians’ Nicholas is aware he is appreciating this ancient continent as if ‘looking through a glass darkly’. Yet it is hoped one can still gain some inkling of the cosmological/spiritual/physical link that is mythically seen between an infinite sky and finite land (which in Aboriginal culture is seen as ‘mother’). A meditation of the eternal can therefore be considered, for all living things on earth die but life also continually regenerates. Thus human creativity can continue to serve the foremost role of heightening human consciousness. Nicholas’s prints – many of which are in a 6”X4” format - often combine the etching techniques of drypoint, sugarlift & aquatint.

Two quotes about the land by prominent Aboriginals which reflects an attitude that it is seen as the nurturer & giver of life:

‘Many people don’t know how to think themselves into the country, the land. They find it hard to think with the land. We Aboriginal people find it hard to think without the land.’

                                                                                                       - Patrick Dodson.

‘The land is something that is always ours; it doesn’t matter what nature or politics do to change it. Land is the Mother Earth to Aboriginal people. We believe the land is all life. We are part of the land and the land is part of us. It cannot be separated by anything or anybody.’

                      - Galarrwuy Yunupingu  (Chairman of the Northern Lands Council).

The artist is on Twitter:    @nicolasnicola22    email: nic_nicola50@hotmail.com   he is not on facebook and it is assumed the above facebook icon can be interactive for those who are & apologies if this is not the case. All the best.     ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

MAGNIFYING/ENLARGING THE ONLINE CATALOGUE PAGES: Please look below the catalogue pages to sight the      - _____________ +      line by which the dot can be moved along towards the plus sign to enlarge the pages in order to have a better read of them. I hope this device will prove helpful.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

OTHER FUNCTIONS: You may like to have a look at these icons that help to improve the reading experience; simply click on them to consider their functions. The first is a search function; the second on the left allows for a row of pages to appear along the bottom; the next icon allows for a better way to read individual pages while the last icon with the two arrows allows for a full screen view so as to better read a page. Anyhow you can experiment and play around with yourself. It is also possible to flip right back to the beginning or to the very end by a lower arrow on either side of the online catalogue which are towards the bottom of both sides of the online catalogue. The left arrow which takes one back to the beginning of the catalogue is displayed in the second image below. All the best. NN.

Arrows on either side of the online catalogue which go straight to the beginning or to the end of the catalogue. The arrow on display on the left is to go straight back to the start.

(*It is due to technical limits that the online catalogue has been sectioned into three volumes. However, as stated in the introduction of the catalogue itself  in Part I it may be preferred to simply view the main galleries without the 'extras' which are offered in Parts II & III. it also bemuses the artist that the online catalogue has finally ben uploaded on November 24 - somewhat coincidentally - as it was on this date many years ago there was the very memorable exhibition opening at the Apostrophes Cafe at Surry Hills in 2005. It is also Toulouse Lautrec's birthday while on November 28 it is William Blake's birthday. (However, it should be disclosed there has been a little, minor reworking of Part I a few days later after reviewing this document but the changes have been few and far in between). While February 2016 is a hundred years since DADA literally sprung to life - like the goddess Athena emerging from the head of Zeus - at the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich. All the best. NN).

P.S. There is thought of an additional catalogue section of the actual images that will be selected for the physical exhibition which will come into existence during or after the exhibition but which the link shall be on this webpage

.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

It should be noted that the artist believes in a non linear open universe which is ever growing and regrowing without limit and thus there shall possibly be added visual and literary paraphernalia as well as links that can be deemed to be associated with the themes of this exhibition and the online catalogue including links already in the online catalogue but which maybe can be made more accessible by also placing them on this webpage along possibly with catalogue associated PDFs that can be downloaded. Furthermore, it should also be mentioned again that it is due to technical issues that the online catalogue exists in three volumes in cyberspace. Thank you for your understanding and patience. Best regards. NN.

100 YEARS OF DADA

'I declare that Tristan Tzara found the word DADA on 8 February 1916 at 6 in the morning....'

                                                                                                                                    - Hans Arp

ERRATA -  there have been some technical errors during the upload of the files and below are the screenshots of two pages from PART II which have two blue dotted lines going across the page where there are web links to videos. The screenshots are intended to give one a clear view of how these pages are meant to appear. The pages in the online catalogue are still adequate to read but it has proven to be very difficult to re-organise these two pages thus this alternative viewing of them. Thank you for your understanding and patience. NN.

By the way one may also notice that some pages in the catalogue are 'cropped' by narrow white borders. This 'feature' is unplanned and has occurred during the uploading process as these white edges & strips are not on the original word or pdf files.

Also some links have mysteriously not converted properly and although it should be possible for those who are most curious to copy & paste them into one's web search browser at some stage will hopefully add them to this webpage in working form. Apart from this somewhat minor 'cyber teething' problems one hopes the online catalogue is still a pleasing enriching & informative experience.

A KALEIDOSCOPE OF INFINITE HUMAN CREATIVITY FOLLOWS:

_____________________________________________________________________

TO GO TO A FULL SCREEN the video's Youtube icon has to be pressed to go to the Youtube webpage from which the full screen option can then be accessed. Many videos will be a strip going down the middle of the full screen due to the manner of filming when the smartphone was in a vertical position. I hope this does not diminish anyone's joyful viewing experience. Some videos are full screen due to being filmed on a proper digital camera.

ALSO A GENERAL LANGUAGE FOREWARNING. As this is a public website it should be mentioned that in a handful of the many song videos the occasional 'strong word' is used which may offend some viewers, although nothing really worse than what can now be sighted on Australian television; yet parental guidance is also recommended). However, with that said all videos/images on show are ultimately intended/meant to be splendidly edifying to the human condition & to contribute to the social discourse. Thank you for your understanding & patience. All the best.

Click (or as more likely if clicking doesn't prove useful: cut & paste into your web search box) on the above link to consider Aboriginal society's cosmological relationship to the stars which was quite sophisticated.

The following video shows an Aboriginal Astronomical Dreamtime story which is specifically aimed for children to view but certainly a good intro for anybody interested in Aboriginal Astronomy - along with the listed Emu Dreaming website above.  James Miller-Wilson also remarks on Aboriginal Astronomy in the BBC World radio documentary on Aboriginal Astronomy. James 'Cuz ' Wilson-Miller at Ica's Backyard has done much to maintain Aboriginal heritage & knowledge such as also being involved with Boomalli Art  & in a documentary about the shell workers of La Perouse which has been viewed on public television. Whilst below is a small video from the Australian Museum about two shell workers who have made the Sydney Opera House & the Sydney Harbour Bridge from shells. It is one way of maintaining traditional skills that would otherwise be lost.

DOLLAR DREAMING: Ben Genocchio on the world of Aboriginal Art.

I heard Bobby Sykes driving in my car - Bek-Jean Stewart. The artist hopes he has not misquoted the singer but this song was written in lieu of doing an academic essay assuming it was just as a legitimate approach to deal with the issue of Aboriginal dispossession which is still very much an ongoing injustice. Definitely very beautiful, haunting and engaging song and very worthy of our consideration...

(Language Warning: there is some strong language towards the end of the song).

BEK-JEAN STEWART's website:  http://www.bekjeanstewart.com

In any case here is Bek-Jean Stewart talking about the origins of 'I heard Bobby Sykes driving in my car' as well as poignantly singing the song in Ica's Backyard in this very, very amateur video version by the artist filmed on a smartphone.

[PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS A WEBPAGE WITH VIDEO CLIPS SUCH AS THIS ONE THAT IS DEDICATED TO THOSE WHO HAVE PERFORMED IN ICA'S BACKYARD: ICA'S BACKYARD].

(Language warning: some strong language towards the end of the video clip).

[ALSO NOTE THAT IN SOME STRANGE TECHNOLOGICAL TWIST SOMEHOW THE VIDEO CLIP HAS UPLOADED TWICE SO THE VIDEO REPEATS AFTER ITS END. THE SINGING IS ACTUALLY ONLY APPROXIMATELY 7 MINUTES LONG. HOWEVER, ONE SUPPOSES ONE CAN LISTEN TO THE SONG AGAIN WITHOUT RETURNING TO THE START].

PAUL KELLY singing TO HER DOOR at the FREEDOM RIDE CONCERT March 20 2015 Sydney University Lawn.

It should be mentioned that these videos - along with others - are not exactly of the highest quality but are mainly on view for social, archival and historical reasons rather than for aesthetic ones. Much like an ancient fresco can be appreciated today, even though the wall may be cracked with big pieces missing, such amateur video can also be of similar cultural & social value, if for nothing else at least providing a historical record.  All the best.

Language Warning: there is some strong language in this video.

On the general issue of human rights one may wish to also consider the case of the Australian Jock Palfreeman who has been sentenced in Bulgaria for twenty years in a Sofia gaol for a street killing he still adamantly states he did not commit. While in gaol he has creatively spent time attempting to improve the rights and conditions for prisoners which has come at further cost to himself.

ZEUS. At the risk of being somewhat overly self-indulgent I include this video with the background to it being that I noticed that on a Saturday visit to Glebe a regular Sapphos Bookshop Poetry Night was to be on Tuesday October 6 and it was to be a tribute to Alan Ginsberg's HOWL with the likes of Reg Mombassa reading out poems. I have read ZEUS out many times, (most notably at a recent local OXJAM party event, people seem to much like this poem so always happy to read it out). Every October 6 I spare a thought of how I went and saw the Prodigal Son by Rembrandt at the Hermitage in 1998 (one of my favourite paintings and which I spent long time travelling to finally get to see it) and so decided to go an read out ZEUS in the open section.  I should add this reading is a little subdued compared to the more feisty reading I have made on other occasions. Thanks to KV for filming the reading. P.S. by some quirk of uploading this video repeats itself and is actually just 3 minutes or so long....

Talking of cultural spaces Petersham Bowling Club is an interesting place as it does not rely on pokies to make an income and this has encouraged this venue to be more creative hosting anything from children parties to film nights to African music afternoons to band nights. (That, at least, is what the artist has been too...). Below is some of the music that has been put on there. The Whitetop Mountaineers were also at the Petersham Bowling Club but as yet due to no available footage in lieu is Martha Spencer providing an example of flatfooting thanks to youtube.
